The Beverly Center shopping mall is housed in a mammoth, eight-story behemoth of a building, with wavy, plexiglas tube escalators which snake up its sides.
The Beverly Center is located at the edge of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, California, between La Cienega and San Vicente boulevards.
The shopping mall itself occupies only the upper three stories of the structure (levels 6 through 8); the bottom five floors are taken up by parking areas (except for the ground floor, which formerly housed the nation's first Hard Rock Cafe, and which still contains California Pizza Kitchen, PF Chang's, the Grand Luxe Cafe, and other upscale restaurants.)
Tenants include Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and a 13-screen movie theater (originally a 14-screen multiplex). While the mall features staples of American retail--such as Banana Republic, Victoria's Secret and Forever 21--it is also home to several high-end designer boutiques, including Armani Exchange, Just Cavalli, D&G Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Ben Sherman, Diesel, Gucci, Dior, and Hugo Boss.
The mall's Rooftop Terrace offers sweeping views of the Hollywood Hills, Downtown Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Westside.
The Center's externally-visible escalators previously resembled similar escalators at the Pompidou Center in Paris, France; however, the escalators underwent renovation in 2007 and now have a significantly different appearance.
Located just a mile away is The Grove at Farmers Market. Opened in 2002, The Grove provides heavy competition to the Beverly Center as much of the business the Beverly Center once saw has been diverted to The Grove. The Beverly Center takes in 13 million people per year, compared to The Grove's 21 million.
